The name Brown's Beach refers to a brand that was owned by William W. Brown. In 1901 he produced the first Brown's Beach garments; a jacket and a four pocket vest. His intention was to create functional and stylish garments that could be used during the cold Massachusetts winters. The brand found it's success among fishermen and hunters and became synonymous with the great outdoors.
The original Brown's Beach company is now defunct, and today one can find many versions of the clothes manufactured by different companies. What they all have in common is that they use the classic Beach fabric consisting of a two-ply weave blend 70% wool and 30% cotton. The cotton is usually left undyed, creating characteristic highlights in the fabric which generally comes in dark hues.
This version of the classic Brown's Beach Jacket is made by Sugar Cane. The fabric is made in the same way as back in 1901, with the patterned surface and a rugged backside. It is quite dense, so any chilly winds are kept out, but it is not bulky, which makes it a great fabric keeping you warm.
