It was first introduce by the US Army as uniform for the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) that operated from 1933 to 1942 in the U.S. as part of the New Deal for the unemployed, and later used during WWII as the barracks working denim outfit.
They will shrink with wear & washing, though can be stretched out to size when damp.
